Hit the Lights Toledo Concert reviews
Meh
Growing up in Cleveland, they were my favored band. Unfortunately, I never saw them live before, but I was genuinely disappointed - it was presumably the 2nd worst concert I've ever seen. I had to witness Kid Rock opening for the Rolling Stones on the zip code tour, and that surely takes the cake. I still fancy El Camino afterward, but they certainly evolved into a more Coachella style band instead of the raw band they originated as. It was all about the light show - the bass sounded thin, Dan's guitar EQ/volume was all over the place, Patrick's drum kit didn't stand out at all, and every beat sounded precisely the same. You'd think that while they were on tour, there would be more enthusiasm or a special set, but no - they just phoned in the same setlist. Rock concerts used to feature a lot of improvisation or jams lengthening songs, rendering them distinct. I'd have preferred to stay home and just put on the CD than sit through two hours of traffic. They must be one of those bands who require an exceptional sound engineer/producer to sound good. I don't understand why Dan would choose to perform a high falsetto song on tour - it sounds impressive on an album, but in person, I couldn't stop laughing. I recognize this is a critical review, but it's out of frustration because I know their origins and adored this band growing up in the early 2000s. I feel regretful for the singer of Buffalo Killers, downgraded to playing bass for money, as I witnessed them at a tiny bar in Columbus in 2007, and they were outstanding. It seems to be all about your agent. The soccer mom beside me didn't liven up until "Gold on the Ceiling" played - enjoy your cash and new audience, I presume.
